Over 53 Parliamentarians, give their support to
he Sichuan Earthquake Children's Community Fund to
help the Earthquake Victims in China MARKHAM - On May 12th, China was struck by a magnitude 8.0 earthquake destroying homes, buildings, trapping untold numbers in mounds of concrete, steel and earth and leaving thousands of people homeless and over 67,000 dead. With the support of over 53 Parliamentarians, the Ice Breaking Care Society (IBC) has formed the Sichuan Earthquake Children's Community Fund (SECCF) to raise money to provide relief for the victims. Sponsored by Homeland International Inc, (HII), a registered charitable organization, the fund is dedicated to rebuild healthy, environmental sustainable communities from the earthquake affected region in Sichuan, China to provide education, housing, health care and social services for the victims. "We will donate the fund raised by selling florescent stick lights at the annual carnival, Taste ofAsia, to the project," said Dr. Ken Ng, the founder of Federation of Chinese Canadians in Markham who is co chairing SECCF in Ontario "We want the young people to feel that they have done something meaningful while enjoying the performance." This year's Taste ofAsia event will be held in Markham on June 28/29 and is expected to attract over 50,000 attendants. David Lam, another co-chair ofthe project, reminds Canadians that the reconstruction of the damaged areas will take many years. "Over 7000 schools had totally collapsed. We have to be prepared to provide long term support for the children. They have already lost their homes and their loved ones and they cannot afford to lose their future." "We are very impressed by the vision and the zero administration cost policy ofIBC," says Khurram Shroff, vice president of HII, and he intends to build a long term partnership with IBC. Hughes Eng, Order of Ontario, who is the co-chair ofthe Sichuan Relief Project initiated by the Chinese Cultural Center, is very pleased that IBC is stepping up to the plate. "It is great to see that IBC leverages its unique strengths to help." "We must try our best to help our brothers and sisters in China" says Raymond Chan, the MP of Richmond, British Columbia who mobilizes the sponsorship from the parliamentarians, "1 am so glad to see Canadians across the country are responding generously to help the victims." Susan Kadis, the MP ofThornhill, is a great suppOlter ofthis project. She said, "Om constituents are deeply concerned about the devastating situations in Sichuan, My heart is with the thousands ofchildren who have lost their parents and I will do whatever I can to help". Godwin Chan, Councilor of Richmond Hill, appeals to the participants ofthe Asian Heritage Month Celebration organized by the Town of Richmond Hill to support the effort of me. "1 encourage everyone who comes to our event to contribute to the fund", said Councilor Chan. Special thanks to the following co-sponsors.
